In our hot country, fleas and ticks accompany us throughout the year, but in the summer when the temperatures are high, the rate of their reproduction, and their quantity increases, and our dogs begin to itch...

fleas They are the most common cause of allergies in pets. An allergy to fleas is actually an allergy to the flea's saliva, which is secreted when the flea sucks blood from the animal. It manifests itself in intense itching, baldness, redness and sores. In dogs, these marks will be concentrated in the back of the body: back, base of the tail, back thighs, etc. In cats these signs can appear in different places such as nape, neck, back and more.

It is important to mention and remember that fleas are blood-sucking parasites, and an animal infected with very large amounts of fleas may even suffer from anemia as a result.

The fleas can also lay eggs in carpets, mattresses and furniture around the house, and we too may suffer from their bites. It is recommended to treat regularly, and throughout the year, with preparations against fleas both in the animal itself and in its immediate environment. Be sure to use registered preparations, and suitable for the animal's type, age and weight.

Ticks are also a health hazard for our dogs and cats, and their quantity also increases significantly in the summer. Less ticks will cause itching, but with one bite can infect the animal with several dangerous bacteria and parasites that can cause various diseases.
The most common disease in Israel that is transmitted through ticks is of course "tick fever". This is a disease caused by a bacterium found in the tick's saliva, which infects the animal while sucking the blood. Without proper treatment the disease can be dangerous. Here too preventive treatment with licensed preparations against ticks is important and saves lives.
If your dog shows signs of apathy and fatigue or lack of appetite and a high fever or you suspect that he is infected with tick fever, you should go straight to the vet.

Tick fever can be treated when it is diagnosed in the early stages of the disease, if the dog has reached advanced stages of the disease it will be very difficult to save it.
The treatment for tick fever will include antibiotics and sometimes steroids. If the dog is in a serious condition, he may need a fluid transfusion and in severe cases even a blood transfusion.
