Who among us does not sneak food under the table for his faithful dog? But the question arises, are we doing the right thing despite the Polish and understandable impulse to make the dog's heart and stomach happy?  The answers are not unequivocal, but it is very advisable to pay attention to a few things:

    • Note that there are foods that are absolutely forbidden to give to dogs such as chocolate, onions, garlic and grapes - be well aware of what is allowed and what is not allowed for the dog to eat.
    • Chicken or beef bones are the most common leftovers, but also very dangerous. They can cause blockages and perforations throughout the dog's digestive system. They should be avoided completely.
    • Keep in mind that very spicy or fatty food can have a negative effect on the dog's stomach. Spicy spices or very sauces are not recommended, your dog and you will suffer a lot...
    • Giving leftovers from the table will get your dog used to clinging to you and regularly asking you to share your portion with him during meals - think carefully about whether this behavior is acceptable to you
    • If you chose to give your dog leftovers - it is advisable that you collect them and serve them to him at the end of your meal on his plate - that way he won't get used to begging you under the table.
    • Don't load it - even if you decided to collect the leftovers and give them to the dog or cat - there is no reason to give him all the leftovers of the 32 people who brought the table on the eve of the holiday. It is recommended that the amount of homemade food does not exceed about 10% of the general daily portion that the dog eats.
    • Remember - human food will usually be more palatable to your dog's palate than dry food, no matter how tasty it is. It may be difficult for your dog to get used to returning to eating the food that you give regularly.
    • Dogs fed leftovers tend to be significantly more obese than dogs whose diet is based on dry food. Obesity can cause the dog to have health problems in the future such as diabetes, arthritis, heart changes and in general a shorter life span.
